miKashBoks as a platform digitizes informal group-based financing such as Village Savings & Loans Association (VSLAs) and Rotating Credit and Savings Association (ROSCA) transactions; financing models providing the only viable access to financial services to hundreds of millions excluded from the formal financial sector.
Via an easy-to-use offline-first mobile application, miKashBoks digitizes group-based transactions and interactions and have these automatically synced to the cloud when a network is detected. Obvious advantages over current paper-based methods are that of improved data management and security. However, most salient is that digital financial profiles are being developed for hundreds of millions of individuals previously invisible to the formal banking sector and without access to complex and better-funded lending, savings, and insurance products offered by Banks and Microfinance Institutions. Fragile and excluded populations can now leverage financial profiles developed within their grassroot communities to access services nationally through consent driven access to their data by banks, MFIs, and other financial institutions wanting to make data-driven creditworthiness assessments.

AUDIENCE
The app is free to download and use. Anyone supporting (e.g. VSLA promoters) or running (record keeper) an informal group-based financing association can download and use the app. We will be publishing several training materials and toolkits to help promote adoption and use.
Promoters, organization or individuals facilitating the establishment and capacity development of these groups aim to improve the financial resilience of communities they support in a manner that enables proper monitoring and evaluation of these groups in a cost-effective and operationally efficient manner. This app helps them manage and monitor VSLA groups digitally and remotely, maximizing their footprint and scaling the number of groups they can effectively support.
Record Keepers can use the app to better manage transaction records, increase transparency through transaction notifications sent by SMS to group members, increase repayment rates through SMS nudges when loans are due and bridge the divide between their members and the formal lending sector.
